How to Remove Watermark from Photo in Photoshop (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

Photographers, editors and content creators often come across images or designs that have watermarks, especially when working with reference photos, or sample images or images from archives.

For the beginner the removal of these marks may seem tricky, as they worry about blurring details or lowering image quality. In this guide, we will show you how to remove a watermark from photos in  Photoshop while also retaining a clean and natural result.

Please note that watermark removal should only be done for personal or legitimate purposes, always respecting the rights of the original creator.

How to Remove a Watermark from a Photograph in Photoshop

Removing a watermark in Photoshop might seem difficult, but it is actually very easy once you know the tools. The trick is to work carefully, keeping your original image, and cleaning the watermark naturally.

It does not matter if you are restoring a photo, or if you want to incorporate a change into a design you are doing for your own personal use. These steps will show you how to do it so that you have a clean, professional-looking appearance.

Step 1: Create a Copy of Your Photo

Before making any changes, always protect your original file.

• In the Layers panel, right-click on the Background layer.

• Select Duplicate Layer and rename it Remove Watermark.

This ensures that your original photo remains safe and untouched. Think of it as a backup! If you ever want to start over,  your untouched original photo is available.

Step 2: Highlight Watermark Area

Now, it's time to target the watermark specifically.

• Go to the Select menu in the top toolbar.

• Choose Color Range from the drop-down list.

• In the new window, set Select to Sampled Colors.

• Click on the first Eyedropper Tool button (the left button) and select any part of the watermark to sample its color.

This samples the color from the watermark, allowing Photoshop to identify the exact color you want to remove. Make sure the Invert box is Unchecked, that way only the watermark will be selected.

Step 3: Refine Your Selection

Now, to refine the accuracy of your selection, choose just the watermark.

• When the colour is selected, adjust the Fuzziness slider.

• Lower it to about 34 to reduce the range of colors and isolate the watermark more precisely.

You will see a preview of the areas selected. When only the area containing the watermark is highlighted, click OK to confirm.
This allows Photoshop not to grab any parts of the background that might be in a similar tone.

Step 4: Soften The Selection Edges

Even after selecting the watermark, the edges might appear rough and uneven. To get a natural appearance at the end, you should refine your selection.

• Go to Select > Select and Mask.

Adjust the following settings for natural blending:

• Radius: 60 pixels

• Feather: 2 pixels

• Contrast:  70%

• Shift Edge: +30%

Scroll down to Output Settings, choose Selection under Output To, and click OK.

This refinement will soften the edges around the area removed, so that there are no distinct marks left over from the watermark.

Step 5: Slightly Expand The Area

Sometimes, a watermark leaves faint traces near its edges. To make sure no faint edges of the watermark remain, slightly expand your selection.

• Go to Select > Modify > Expand.

• Set Expand By to 1 pixel.

This value may vary according to the image size. You can increase it slightly in the case of larger images, just enough to include the watermark borders but of course, without affecting the surrounding details.

Step 6: Fill and blend in the area selected

This is where the magic happens, removing the watermark!

• Go to Edit > Fill.

• In the Fill dialogue box, select Content-Aware from the Contents drop-down box menu.

• Leave other options as default, and click OK.

Photoshop will then analyze the pixels around it and automatically fill in the selected area to match the background.

Step 7: Check and re-check your work

Once the Content-Aware Fill is complete, simply deselect the area:

• Press Ctrl+D (or Cmd+D on Mac) to deselect the area.

• Zoom in, and check the area at the spot where the watermark used to be.

Most of the time, Photoshop does a remarkably good job on blending the whole area. If there is a trace of imperfection, use the Clone Stamp Tool or the Healing Brush Tool should remedy it.

Here are a couple of extra things to keep in mind to attain a natural finish:

• Zoom in and inspect carefully. Be sure and work at 100% zoom, so that no slight traces of the watermark are left.

• Use smaller brushes for touch ups. Particularly if you are working with textured backgrounds like fabrics or walls.

• Save your progress often. Ensure to keep a layer version of your file in the PSD version before you export it in JPEG or PNG version.

Note: Please keep in mind to use these techniques responsibly and to respect the copyright laws. Watermark removal should only be done for legitimate or personal use purposes.
